  1. Let me tell you something! This camera is probably the greatest thing since HDTV! I purchased this camera to tape my son singing in his youth choir. I was unable to get really close to him, so I used the zoom and anti shake feature and let me tell you, it was like i was five feet away from him. Totally amazing pictures too. You can video tape and take still photos at the same time this thing. It probably does things that I don’t even know about yet. If you buy a camera, get this one. It is the greatest!!

  2. This is an awesome little camera, especially considering the price. Granted, I regularly use MUCH higher grade cameras such as a Canon XH-A1 and 5D Mk II’s, but as a home consumer camera I love it. I don’t actually own any of those cameras (I use them with my church), so I still wanted a decent HD camera to have around the house, and this fit the bill. It takes very high quality video and is easy to use.

Of course the most important bit to cover here is video quality. Simply put, it’s excellent. It records at up to 24Mbps at 1920×1080 and is plenty good for any home use, and I would even say some B-camera work on bigger productions. It’s hard to talk about video quality in words though so I’ll just let you see it. Here is a video I did with it recently including some indoor tight shots and some outside shots in the snow. Keep in mind I exported this to youtube at only 4mbps but you can still get a feel for it. – [...]

The form factor is great, and one of this camera’s biggest advantages over, say, a Flip or any of those other brick style cameras that are everywhere. Your hand can just curl around it and perfectly control the shot. The zoom rocker is right at your index finger tip, and the record/stop button is easy to get with your thumb. There is nothing on this camera that doesn’t need to be there. I love the design. The image stabilizer also seems to work very well. Videos seem very smooth despite being handheld.

The software is decent, though it is probably the weakest part of the camera. Almost all of the options require use of the touchscreen. Being used to cameras with external lens controls, I do miss that, but I have to remind myself that this is an entirely different class of camera. That said, whatever option you used last, be it focus, exposure, or the audio level, stays at the bottom of the screen as an easy to access button for further adjustment. I do like that.

My only real annoyance with this camera is the AVCHD format is records in. It’s just annoying to work with on the post production side of things. It is pretty much un-viewable in OS X natively, I have to throw it into Final Cut and convert it to ProRes. Before I can do anything. VLC will play the native MTS format but it’s a little rough and comes out very interlaced. It’s still much better than dealing with tapes, but not quite as simple as it could be. I guess this is more of a fault with FCP, but it’s also annoying that the lowest quality thing it will convert it to for me to edit in is ProRes 422 (Proxy) which runs at 49mbps, about double the highest quality that the camera records in, meaning it wastes a lot of unnecessary disk space. ProRes does work very well as an intermediate though, so whatever.

Overall, this is an excellent camera, especially for the price range. If you’re looking for a low-ish range HD camera, I definitely recommend it. Even if you’re really looking at the cheaper brick form cameras like a Flip, I would say the slight price difference is well worth it. I’ve used both and this is just a whole different world of camera.

  3. Great Camera! Zooming takes a little to get used to because it’s slower then me but I don’t most things fast. I do recommend a wide angle lens to take in more up close and personal video but it’s a fast camera and easy to use. It’s almost a pro grade unit because of all the extras you can add but I would get extra memory cards if you want to use more than a hour of filming at a time.
